  1. Stop Doing Scrum; Start Doing Agile - Peter Van de Voorde

About the Presenter:

Peter is a 33 year old Belgian with a love of boardgames, skiing, reading, socializing and helping people. He started 9 years ago as a Java developer and has since been in over 20 projects in different roles, ranging from support over development to scrum master and project coordinator. He's a Community Developer at Atlassian and he's helping others become better at what they do.

Presentation:

"If I got a cent for each time I heard a variant of ‘We implemented Agile/Scrum/Kanban/Xp at our company, but it didn’t work for us, because we do things differently,’ I would have 4.10 € (or $).” During this session, Peter will go into why you should stop trying to implement a methodology from a book in just one team and instead try to create an agile methodology for your company as a whole.

He discusses
• The history of agile and the ideas behind it
• How you can enlighten your company about the advantages of agile
• Successes and failures and how we can learn from them
At the end of this session, you’ll have ideas, tips, and tricks for making your company agile.

  1. Agile Metrics - Velocity is NOT the Goal - Doc Norton

About the Presenter:

Michael Norton (Doc) is a software delivery professional working to make the world of software development a better place. His experience covers a wide range of development topics. Doc declares expertise in no single language or methodology and is immediately suspicious of anyone who declares such expertise.A frequent and well rated international speaker, Doc is passionate about helping others become better developers, working with teams to improve delivery, and building great organizations. In his role at CTO2, Doc is provided opportunities to realize his passion every day.

Presentation:

Velocity is one of the most common metrics used (and misused) on agile projects. Velocity is simply a measurement of speed in a given direction; the rate at which a team is delivering toward a product release. As with a vehicle en route to a particular destination, increasing the speed may appear to ensure a timely arrival. However, that assumption is dangerous because it ignores the risks with higher speeds. And while it’s easy to increase a vehicle’s speed, where exactly is the accelerator on a software team?
Michael “Doc" Norton walks us through the Hawthorne Effect and Goodhart’s Law to explain why setting goals for velocity can actually hurt a project's chances. Take a look at what can negatively impact velocity, ways to stabilize fluctuating velocity, and methods to improve velocity without the risks. Leave with a toolkit of additional metrics that, coupled with velocity, give a better view of the project's overall health.

Both presentations will be held in English.
