Planning is a part of being agile. “Responding to change over following a plan” doesn’t mean “never plan”. If a team is going to "adapt" as part of "inspect and adapt", they have to know what experiments they'll perform and what hypothesis they're looking to confirm. And agile ceremonies like Daily Standups, Retrospectives, and certainly Sprint Planning all have a forward-looking aspect to them. In agile, we plan just enough to gain a shared understanding of what we will do to move from the present to the future we want. An agile approach builds in lots of feedback along the way to help us adjust our plan based on what we've learned.

If you look back at the foundational agile body of knowledge, you'll see an emphasis on people planning together in the same room, at the same time. What do you do when your team is spread across the city, the country, or the world?

This month at the Agile PM Roundtable, we're rallying around the theme of "Effective Planning Techniques for 100% Remote Teams". This theme was one of the most-requested by prior attendees and we can see why: Effective planning is one of the perennial challenges in aligning people to work together towards shared goals. And planning with 100% remote teams is just as challenging and maybe a bit more so. (Although, there might be some benefits to remote and asynchronous planning. We can explore that, too!)

At our next Agile PM Rountable, we'll convene a Lean Coffee session in which we, the participants, determine the topics that we focus on and how much time we dedicate to them. You never know, exactly, how it will turn out, but come prepared to be surprised by what we learn from each other!
