PRESENTATION: "Software Engineering Management Myths".
There are many so-called laws, rules, and theories in software engineering management that are often used to justify how we make decisions and organize teams and systems — but what if many of them are myths? In this thought-provoking talk, I challenge several well-known ideas (including Tuckman's team development stages and Conway's Law), and invite the audience to rethink what truly drives effective collaboration and delivery. The goal of the talk is not to dismiss these models, but to encourage a more critical and responsible approach to decision-making. I focus on how and why these “laws” turn into myths, what signals indicate that a model is being misapplied, and what leaders can keep in mind when making decisions based on conventional wisdom.
SPEAKER
I am an experienced Engineering Leader with 15+ years in software development, currently working as a Senior Engineering Manager at Sportradar. I have solid experience in building high-performing teams, defining engineering strategy, and mentoring future leaders. I also practice as an agile coach, bringing a mindset of continuous improvement. Known for being a critical thinker and advocate of radical candor, I am also an active speaker in the management community and an evangelist of product-mindset.During my career, while being an engineering manager I got lucky to "wear" other hats (like Delivery Manager, Account Manager, Pre-sales engineer, Product Manager) hence I know how product development looks like from different angles. This knowledge has helped me many times to align engineering direction with real business needs.Outside of work, I like to share what I’ve learned. Sometimes that means speaking at conferences, and sometimes it’s through my blog at vladzenkevich.com
