AI in Law Part II | AI & Society Brisbane

***

We explored the foundations. Now we go deeper.
At our first AI in Law event, we unpacked how AI is being applied in legal practice, the very real problem of hallucinations, and how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is changing what's possible. The conversation was sharp, the room was engaged — and we left with more questions than we arrived with.
That's exactly why we're back.

AI in Law Part II — How Lawyers Are Using AI, and What It Means for All of Us
AI is no longer a future-state conversation for the legal profession. It is already in the room — drafting, researching, reviewing, and advising. But as lawyers adopt these tools at pace, the implications extend well beyond the profession itself.
What happens to access to justice? Who is accountable when AI gets it wrong? And what does AI mean for one of the most complex corners of law — intellectual property and patents?
These are not hypothetical questions. They are live, and they matter to all of us.

Why this conversation matters
As AI becomes embedded in legal practice, the challenge shifts from:
"Can AI assist lawyers?"
to
"What does it mean for society when it does?"
This event explores that shift — through the lens of practitioners who are living it.

What we'll explore

  • How lawyers are actually using AI day-to-day — tools, workflows, and realities
  • AI in patent law — what it means for inventors, businesses, and IP strategy
  • Accountability and liability when AI is part of legal decision-making
  • The impact on clients, access to justice, and the broader public
  • What human judgement still does — and must continue to do — in law

Part I recap — where we've been
At our first AI in Law event we explored AI applications across legal practice, the hallucination problem in legal AI, and how RAG is being used to ground AI outputs in reliable sources. If you missed it, don't worry — Part II stands on its own. If you were there, you'll hit the ground running.

About AI & Society
AI & Society is a national community convening people across disciplines to explore the human, ethical, and civic implications of artificial intelligence. Through curated events and facilitated workshops across Australian cities, we build practical AI literacy, bridge technical insight with societal responsibility, and strengthen human judgement in an AI-enabled world.
AI & Society is not about hype. It's about discernment.
Because the defining question is no longer what AI can do — but what society should trust.
