Can AI Partially Replace a Therapist? An Honest Discussion

Details
In a world where access to therapy is limited—whether due to cost, availability, or life circumstances—many of us have quietly turned to AI for emotional support. But what can AI actually offer in place of a human therapist? And where does it fall short?
This session is an open, honest exploration of AI’s emerging role in mental and emotional support.
We’ll begin with a short reflection from Jeremy, who has both trained and practiced as a therapist, and who also brings a lot of experience of being in therapy himself. He has also written extensively about how AI intersects with therapeutic ideas and emotional support.
After his sharing, we’ll open the floor for group discussion.
Together, we’ll explore questions like:
- Which specific functions of a therapist do you think AI can partially replicate?
- What risks or limitations have you felt when relying on AI for emotional support?
- Would you ever recommend someone talk to AI instead of going to therapy? Why or why not?
- What ethical or personal boundary would you not want AI to cross, even in emotional support?
Whether you’ve used AI as a journaling partner, a late-night listener, or a source of reflection—you’re welcome here. Let’s explore what this space can (and can’t) hold.
