Tech Talk: Comprehensive Analysis of FLOP Calculations in Large Language Models

Abstract: In this talk, Sanjay will delve into the mathematical principles and methodologies for calculating floating-point operations (FLOPs) in training large language models (LLMs). The discussion breaks down key architectural components, including multi-head self-attention, feed-forward networks, residual connections, and layer normalization, to provide a detailed understanding of their computational demands. The analysis extends to forward and backward pass complexities, memory requirements, and emerging model optimizations, including sparse attention and Mixture of Experts (MoE).
