Most companies don't need AI/ML

We are filming a podcast in front of a live audience. Unlike all those static podcasts, YOU - the audience - can ask questions. I'll smoothly work them into the flow. We have one requirement for our guests "bring a project or a strong opinion."

Our first guest is Dr. Craig Savage. Dr. Savage brings the strong opinion that Most companies don't need AI/ML. The rest is an interview style dialogue between Dr. Savage, me - the interviewer and you - the audience.

Craig has worked in algorithm development, prototype systems, process improvements and mathematical modelling for two decades. He brings experience working as a liaison between disparate groups, including industry and academia, analysts and management, and engineers and medical professionals. His international career includes defence work, biomedical engineering (Bionic Vision Australia at the University of Melbourne), teaching, and risk modelling.

Recently, his emphasis has been on the monitoring and communication regarding model development; in his work, the primary obstacles have not been technical, but rather the communication, understanding, usage and ongoing monitoring of mathematical models.

Craig has worked in the banking sector as a Senior Analyst and a Manager of Models Management. As an analyst, he brought fresh insight and approaches to LGD modelling based on machine learning (k-means clustering). The final model was well-received by internal stakeholders and the regulator.

As a manager, he leveraged freely available software to drastically reduce schedules whilst simultaneously increasing quality through reproducibility and automating documentation.

Craig has a passion for teaching, mentoring and developing himself and his peers. In his free time, he mentors graduate students at the University of Melbourne, gives free technical talks, and is a volunteer coach for ultimate frisbee on Saturday mornings.

He has experience in a variety of fields, including machine learning, state estimation, signal processing and regression theory. His skills including programming (R, Matlab, C), process improvements (served as Kaizen champion and Six Sigma expert), and technical writing (over 20 academic papers published). By combining these skills with business acumen and communication, Craig is well-suited to solve a wide-range of problems.

The Enterprise Data Science Architecture Podcast aims to be the most entertaining industry podcast. Your host, Slava Razbash, has worked in data science roles since 2011. He asks the right questions.
