ABSTRACT
Regardless of what power source passenger cars use, another significant shift in auto design has occurred over the last 10 – 20 years. Electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic control systems are being replaced with purely electronic ones. Switches, knobs, and dials on the dashboard have given way to touchscreens, wiring in cable runs with bus networks, and even steer-by-wire systems have been introduced.

Under the hood of the latest models, you might find up to 150 microprocessors. Some have even said…this is not a CAR anymore. It is a C.O.W (computer on wheels)! Add in the wireless section (ONSTAR ®, GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth), and all this connectivity makes an attractive target for a cyberattack, either for financial gain or worse, affecting driving safety.

This talk will focus on the cyber threats to the safety and reliability of gasoline, electric, and fuel cell-powered cars, examples of past cyberattack, and ways to defend against them.
