ABSTRACT:

Is it a CAR or a C.O.W. (Computer on Wheels)?
An Introduction to Auto Cybersecurity

A huge shift in auto design has taken place over the last 25 years. Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic control systems have been replaced with purely electronic ones. With the advent of hybrids and EV’s, this trend has accelerated.

Under the hood of the latest cars you might find 50 - 150 microprocessors. Add in plenty of wireless in what Detroit calls “telematics” ( ONSTAR ®, GPS, Wi-Fi, Cellular, and Bluetooth) and all this connectivity makes an attractive target for a cyberattack, either for financial gain, or worse, affecting driving safety. If the attacker is a nation-state, and the target is a fleet of government or emergency vehicles, you have the recipe for an attack on US critical transportation infrastructure.

This talk will focus on the cyber threats to the safety and reliability of gasoline and electric vehicles, examples of past cyberattacks, and the need for more cybersecurity engineers to work in this area.
