What we're about

Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Originating in China some 2,000 years ago, it is popular throughout Asia, the Pacific Islands, Europe and the United States. Crews consist of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. The Alameda Dragon Flyers Dragon Boat Racing Club runs practices and boot camps 3 times a week.

We participate in local and West Coast races from April through October each year, and have an active social calendar for paddlers and their non-paddling friends and family members. Novice, recreational and competitive paddlers 18 years and older are invited to to attend 3 introductory sessions before joining.

Equipment and instruction are provided. It's a great workout at a bargain price - come check us out today! We meet at the Bridgeside Shopping Center, 2531 Blanding Avenue in Alameda. Our dock is behind the Nob Hill grocery store. Ask for Nancy or Carol when you arrive. E-mail carol1015@comcast.net for more information.

When you RSVP for a Meetup with Alameda DragonFlyers, we are holding a space in our boat for you. If you find you cannot attend, please change your RSVP to make room for another guest. Thanks!

Dragon boat racing is the ultimate team sport. Twenty people paddle a long, narrow racing boat in a challenging sport that's really taken hold in the Bay Area. Our racing season runs from March to October every year, but we paddle year 'round and welcome newcomers on Saturdays. Active adults are invited to attend a free introductory session at one of our 90 minute practices. We'll provide the boats, a paddle, life vest, or personal flotation device (PFD), coaching and camaraderie. Practices are on Saturdays from 10:30 to noon. Arrive a few minutes early to get oriented and outfitted. We don't paddle in strong winds or hard rain, so if weather conditions dictate it, we will cancel the Meetup. Participants will be notified, but it may be shortly before starting time. When you RSVP for our Meetup, you have reserved a seat in our boat. If you find you cannot come, please change your status as soon as possible so we can make room for someone else. It's a water sport -- there is occasional splashing. So wear layered, quick-dry clothing and wear shoes that can get wet. Bring a filled water bottle and sun protection. Read "Visitor Info for Alameda DragonFlyers" in the Photo section.
