What we’re about

The Alamo City Rivermen is a canoe and kayak club in San Antonio, Texas that was founded in 1987. Our members include all age groups, all skill levels, boat types and all types of paddling; flat water, whitewater, slow rivers, fun rivers, coastal bays and estuaries. Some have raced and even participate in the Texas Water Safari. We welcome canoers and kayakers to join us who enjoy and love paddling rivers and being outdoors on the water.

We enjoy doing all types of trips , from easy short day floats on local rivers, to lake paddles, car camping base trips, island camping overnighters or self-outfitted multi-day expedition type wilderness adventures. We traditionally are fond of camping paddle trips, often sharing a communal Dutch oven meal, and are known for our winter annual Freeze Trip. Cynics call us an eating club that paddles. We are also active in community service supporting river conservation, cleanups, Triathlon support and access advocacy. For river trip reports, and other cool stuff, see our website at Alamo City Rivermen.

2026 ACR Freeze Trip Otra Vez

2026 ACR Freeze Trip Otra Vez

Utley Bridge Boat Ramp, 1124 FM 969, Bastrop, TX, US

Our signature trip! Island camping on the Colorado River. Dutch Oven kung fu. Burning of the Paddle. Howling coyotes. THE READINGS of the Yukon. Steaming hot spiced wine. Bonfire sparks circling into the sky. Always a good call and a great time. Bring your own cold weather outfitting and food to share. Typically, the trip has decent Texas winter weather, with cold nights. But that is what the bonfire is for! Club latrine and latrine tent will be provided and NRS Wing camp fly if needed.
THE PLAN:
Arrive at the FM 969 Bridge on the Colorado above Bastrop 9:00 am Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026. We will do a driver’s shuttle to Bastrop Fisherman's Park where we will leave cars. We will plan to arrange with Jamie of Rising Phoenix Adventures at Bastrop, 1409 Chestnut, 512/677-2305, to meet us there with vans to take us back. They rent canoes and kayaks if you need one. Everyone pays their own shuttle fees. Neither they nor the club take responsibility for any theft or damage for cars left at Fisherman's Park. We will return and launch to paddle 8 miles to the Freeze trip island. Look out for bald eagles! Taking lunch on the water, we should arrive at the island around mid-afternoon. The trip leader will locate the fire pit, and the latrine. Help is requested to set up both and find driftwood. We will have a prior planning meeting.
TRADITIONS:
Saturday, appetizers and dutch oven cooking will be shared around the bonfire, with Gluhvein or hot spiced wine this year. The Riverman Oath, the Burning of the Paddle, and THE READINGS of the Tales of the Yukon will follow dinner.
Sunday we will paddle out around noon after the traditional shared Rivermen breakfast the six miles to Fisherman's Park.
