On Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2 p.m. Retired U.S. Navy submariner Terry Owen takes the audience deep beneath the surface to explore the 30-year global service of the nuclear submarine USS Albuquerque, sharing firsthand stories of life aboard and how a submarine truly operates. The presentation concludes with an update on the future USS Albuquerque memorial and its path forward.
The nuclear submarine USS Albuquerque etched its name in the annals of Navy history and in this Albuquerque Historical Society presentation we’ll share its story with you. Imbued with the spirit of the Duke City, it sailed under every major ocean in the world for over 30 years. Did you ever wonder what life on a nuclear submarine was like or how a submarine actually works? You’ll get a first hand account on these topics and more. Lastly, we’ll discuss the future USS Albuquerque memorial and provide an update on its progress.
The program will be held at the Albuquerque Museum at 2000 Mountain Rd. NW in Old Town. Parking is free in the lot south of the Museum. Admission to the Museum and the AHS program is also free.

Terry Owen is a retired U.S. Navy officer having served on submarines, submersibles and surface combatant ships. Following his Navy career, he worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 18 years and now operates his own consulting business. In his spare time, he volunteers as a mountain guide for Kirtland Air Force Base Outdoor Recreation and the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, and pursues outdoor adventures all over the Southwest.
