Restore Riparian Habitat on L Bar Ranch near Laguna!

Details

• What we'll do
Join AWF for a volunteer restoration project on L Bar Ranch near Laguna!

LOCATION: This 54,000-acre property that was acquired by the New Mexico Department of Wildlife in 2022 and connected to the adjoining Marquez Wildlife area, creating the largest state-owned recreational property in New Mexico. Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to camp on this land, which is not open to the public for camping. Directions and details to the camping area will be sent upon your RSVP.

THE PROJECT: We will be removing fences to improve habitat connectivity for wildlife, including crucial elk calving areas for the Mt. Taylor elk herd.

SCHEDULE: Friday, July 11 – Sunday, July 13

We will meet at the campsite on Friday evening. On Saturday morning, AWF will provide coffee, breakfast burritos, and an orientation. We will work Saturday from about 8:30-4:00, and then enjoy a potluck dinner (AWF provides bison or veggie burgers). On Sunday, anyone who is able to stay will work for a few more hours, and we will finish up by noon.

Please note that volunteers do not need to be present for the entire weekend to participate. You are welcome to join us just for the work day Saturday, or camp for just one of the two nights.

• What to bring
GEAR: Bring everything you need for a weekend of camping. For the work, don’t forget gloves, hat, long sleeves, long pants, sturdy boots, and sunscreen. Warm clothes for the evenings and plenty of water are essential. This is New Mexico, so sun, rain, overcast sky and wind or a mix of it all are to be expected.

FOOD: AWF will provide breakfast burritos on Saturday morning and bison or veggie burgers on Saturday evening. Please bring a dish to share for the Saturday potluck dinner, along with your own lunches, snacks, Friday dinner, and lots of water!

• Important to know
To RSVP, please email abqwildlifefederation@gmail.com, and please include a phone number or email contact information so we can update you if anything changes (e.g., weather cancellation). When you RSVP, we will send you detailed directions to the campsite and more information about the project.
