Restore Manuelitas Creek near Las Vegas, NM!

• What we'll do
Join AWF and the New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute as we help restore Manuelitas Creek near Las Vegas, NM!

THE PROJECT: Join AWF for a restoration project at a new site in the Manuelitas Creek watershed! The work will involve constructing rock and log structures in an ephemeral stream to address erosion and increase meandering to improve watershed health. We will be working within walking distance of the camping and kitchen site. This project is part of a collaboration with New Mexico Forest & Watershed Research Institute and Highlands University for geomorphology research.

SCHEDULE: Friday, August 14 – Sunday, August 16
Volunteers do not need to be present for the entire weekend to participate. You are welcome to join us just for the main work day Saturday, or camp for just one of the two nights.

ACCESS: The final 2 miles of the road into the project site are rocky and may be inadvisable for low-clearance passenger vehicles. AWF and Highlands University are providing a shuttle for those who wish to park near the entrance to the ranch and get a ride for the final stretch. The shuttle will be available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, although the hours may be limited. Please indicate in your RSVP if you wish to use the shuttle and we will coordinate the service with you.

DOGS: Dogs are not permitted at this project, at the request of the landowner.

• What to bring
GEAR: Bring everything you need for a weekend of camping and restoration work, including work gloves, hat, long sleeves, long pants, sturdy boots, and sunscreen. We recommend bringing a change of shoes and boots you don’t mind getting muddy. Rain gear, layers, warm clothes for the evenings and plenty of water are essential.
FOOD: AWF will provide veggie breakfast burritos and coffee/tea on Saturday morning and bison or veggie burgers on Saturday evening. When you RSVP, please let us know if you’d like a bison or veggie burger. Please bring a dish to share for the Saturday potluck dinner, along with your own lunches, Friday dinner, Sunday breakfast, and lots of water!
