Making Your Backyard a Wildlife Refuge

At this month's public meeting, our speaker Laurel Ladwig will share information about the New Mexico Backyard Wildlife Refuge Program! Our backyards can be a window into our wondrously complex natural world, filled with extraordinary interactions and interdependencies. Learn all about the New Mexico Backyard Refuge Program and how you can build a certified backyard refuge that contributes to a mosaic of connected habitat in our area. We’ll explore the ways you can support our wild neighbors by sharing resources and being responsive to their needs.

Laurel is a geographer who studies our relationship with the more-than-human world—all the species in the community of life on Earth. In addition to running the Backyard Refuge Program for Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District and the Friends of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge, she is on the advisory board for the Bernalillo County Open Space Master Naturalists and co-coordinates Albuquerque’s participation in the world-wide City Nature Challenge each year. She is enthusiastic about all community science projects that encourage people to develop a relationship with our wild neighbors.
