The Alexandria Film Festival is honored to announce a screening of “The Poppaw Queen.” Friday, February 21, the film will be shown at the Lyceum in Old Town, Alexandria. Doors open at 6 pm, film begins at 6:30. Directed by Malachi Robinson (a DC native), “The Poppaw Queen” chronicles the story of Mary Queen who was one of the 272 enslaved people sold in 1838 by the Jesuits of Maryland to benefit Georgetown University, and trafficked to Louisiana by Alexandria slave traders. The inspiring story includes her descendants’ historic fight for freedom. Robinson will be on hand to take questions from the audience after the film.
