Making Data Human

Throughout history, methods of data collection, analysis, and sorting have been used to categorise and dehumanise the individual. What role can algorithmic art play in presenting data in interactive forms that reveal individuality while instilling empathy in the viewer.

In this talk, artist Ed Fish to discuss how he attempts to humanise historic data through interactive objects that build narratives between oppressive computational processes of the past and current methods of data collection and categorisation.

He’ll also bring along some of his works in progress including his piece “Datensätzen Sie frei” which focuses on the use of IBM punch cards during the holocaust, alongside some experiments with conflict data visualisation and ceramic 3D printing.

Bio

Ed Fish is a computational artist and educator. He graduated with an MA from Goldsmiths last year and is currently program director at the community makerspace D-Lab in Hertfordshire and London.
