A Gentle Introduction to Creative Coding for Complete Beginners

Details

A hands-on beginner-friendly tutorial on creating visual digital art with code.

---

The 1960s saw early explorations of computers and algorithms to create art. Today, in this massively pervasive digital era, artists routinely use data, algorithms and computers create works. The Victoria and Albert Museum is currently celebrating over 50 years of digital art https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/chance-and-control-art-in-the-age-of-computers.

The hands-on practical session is designed for complete beginners, including artists who may never have coded before, or anyone who is a little shy of technology.

We'll take our first steps creating simple shapes and colours, and then progressing to use concepts like randomness, repetition and recursion. By the end of the class you'll have written your first code, created some interesting works, and even had fun doing it!

If we have time, we'll also look at the basics of animation too.

We'll be using a language called Processing, which was designed specifically for artists, and is regularly taught in art and design schools across the world. https://processingfoundation.org/projects

Our meetups are always relaxed, friendly, supporting and welcoming of all abilities and backgrounds.

Algorithmic Art is a community that is well established in London, with over 2500 members. This is the first Algorithmic Art meetup to be held in Cornwall - the first of many! All our events are written up on our blog, where you'll find videos, slides, links to code and examples of our members' work: http://algorithmicartmeetup.blogspot.com.

We'll start the tutorial at 6.30pm and you can arrive from 6pm onwards. We'll aim to finish by 8pm.

All you need to bring is a fully charged laptop with working wifi and a modern browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox. You don't need to install any special software.

If you have any questions get in touch via meetup "contact the organiser" or twitter @algorithmic_art.
