Welcome to The Alignment Meetup!

This group is dedicated to exploring all things related to the "Alignment Problem" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alignment_Problem) in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning systems. Some experts consider this to be one of the most concerning problems facing humanity (https://80000hours.org/problem-profiles/artificial-intelligence/). Others are concerned about the rapid advances in AI and possible development of AGI (artificial general intelligence) that may not be "aligned" with human values.

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, this meetup aims to help you deepen your understanding of the problem (and the latest efforts to address it) as well as engage in stimulating discussions with like-minded individuals. We welcome all, non-technical and technical folks alike, from all fields. Just bring your curiosity, interest and an open mind to learn, collaborate and contribute (if you like).

Beyond gaining a deeper understanding of the problem, the connections you make here may help with...

a) Identify promising and new areas of research
b) Find others who are interested in collaborating on/reviewing research/papers/artifacts
c) Seek and find study and research mentors/buddies

We also aim to invite authors and speakers to the meetups occasionally.

Our Typical Agenda

• 5:00pm to 5:15pm - In-person Arrival
• 5:15pm to 5:45pm - Introductions, networking & discussion on latest news related to AI Alignment
• 5:45pm to 6:45pm - Paper Reading & Discussion (Typically one of the papers from this list: https://vote.scottworley.com/ai-papers-2024)
• 6:45pm to 7:00pm - Wrap-up & Discussion on the next meeting
