Gareth Phillips is an experienced IT security professional with over 18 years in the offensive and defensive disciplines of cyber security. Having made a number of contributions to the industry over the years, which includes co-authoring two internationally published books and presenting a number of ethical hacking courses at BlackHat, Gareth is currently a Cyber Security Research and Development specialist Kryptos Logic and founder of Scapecom Security Solutions.

Gareth is passionate about helping secure organisations, building robust pentest teams and developing unique solutions to improve the security for all organisations.

Summary:

Title: Counter-Strike...hacking back for fun and saving the profits

Hacking back is a controversial topic and you will find many within the security industry split on either side of the coin (yes we should, no we shouldn’t). In this talk, Gareth walks us through a real-life cyber fraud operation that was taking place in a Bank. When the Bank asked its Security team, “by any means necessary”, it resulted in the bad guys machines getting remotely owned and then weeks spent observing who they were and how they operate and how we compromised all their personal social media and email (it also resulted in many fun screenshots that make up most of this talk).

Gareth will outline the amount of effort that went into gaining full access, how the law may or may not allow good guys to get this result and how hard it can be for the good guys vs how easy it is for the bad guys.
