Fundamentals of Modern (Digital) Cryptography

For April and coming off the 2021 Open Source 101 event (taking place March 30), we want to explore a topic that's a little different from recent meetups, but one that is "in the news" and of interest to many in our community (including the ATO team). We want to do so at an introductory level as well.

That topic is (digital) cryptography.

Instead of taking a deep dive, we'll instead use our time to start at the top and look at the fundamentals, which can serve as a starting point for some and a refresher for others. And regardless of attendee experience levels, everyone should learn something. It's a truly fascinating subject.

Topic: Fundamentals of Modern (Digital) Cryptography

Abstract:
This presentation covers the fundamentals of modern digital cryptography, including popular methods of encryption, hashing, and key exchange. Specific topics include aes, sha, mac, Diffie-Hellman, and rsa. The mathematics behind primes, modulus, and elliptic curves is also covered.

Speaker: Bruce Momjian, co-founder and core team member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group

Bio:
Bruce Momjian is co-founder and core team member of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group, and has worked on PostgreSQL since 1996. He has been employed by EDB since 2006. He has spoken at many international open-source conferences and is the author of PostgreSQL: Introduction and Concepts, published by Addison-Wesley. Prior to his involvement with PostgreSQL, Bruce worked as a consultant, developing custom database applications for some of the world's largest law firms. As an academic, Bruce holds a Masters in Education, an honorary doctorate, was a high school computer science teacher, and lectures internationally at universities.

We'll start at 12 noon ET sharp with a welcome and community announcements, then we'll jump right in and wrap up by 1:00 pm ET.

We'll also give away a number of items, as always, including ATO shirts and hats, and our new plush socks (they rock), as well as a technology item or two.
