Description and Difficulty: Join ASTA for a very nice hike around the small and beautiful Hale Lake in Virginia, then continuing on to Comers Rock. The hike around the lake is .6 easy miles, with an elevation gain of 82 feet. We will then hike the trail to Comers Rock. This trail is 1.7 miles, each way, with an elevation gain of 450 feet. This trail is moderate. The final trail to the top of Comers Rock, a former fire watch station, is short and slightly steep with stone steps, and there is a beautiful panoramic view from the top! Total hike is 4 miles.
We will meet in the parking lot by Hale Lake.

Directions: From Independence, VA, head north on US 21, turn left onto SR-658/Comers Rock Rd., continue straight onto SR-672/Blue Springs Rd., in approx. 2.3 miles, turn right onto Hale Lake Rd., and the parking area will be on right in about .6 miles.

Weather: This hike is weather dependent. If the weather forecast turns inclement, we will possibly reschedule the event for a different day and time. If it is questionable, please check back here to the home page before the event to see if conditions have changed, we will try to update event status as timely as practical. Rain gear is always recommended for your pack.

Other Info: You should expect roots, rocks and poor footing in some locations on the trails. To reduce the chance of a fall and for balance, a hiking pole or poles is recommended. Also, please wear shoes with good ankle support and traction. You should bring water, comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and season (example: warm gear in cold weather and rain gear for seasonal hikes is always a good idea), a snack if desired (please pack out any trash), and during bug season a good repellant for mosquitos and ticks may be desired. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome.
