Lecture by Anne Connor
“The Lens and the Brush: a dialog of influence”
From the beginning photography offered exciting new opportunities and ideas.

  • Photography freed artists from the obligation to accurately represent reality. Photography is faster and cheaper, and artists had to reinvent themselves. They did this by focusing on capturing emotions and moods…
  • Early photography had severe limitations, but showed a different representation of reality. Since camera shutter speeds were long, parts of an image were blurred (e.g. leaves). Painters started to incorporate tis blurriness into their work (Camille Corot….). Eventually this led to the birth of impressionism…
  • These and other influences will be discussed during the talk.

Exhibit by Fred Weling: “Life is Color”
The exhibit shows 22 large photographs of people, wildlife and landscapes. Some images, like the ones captured in Costa Rica, were selected because of their vibrant colors, reflecting the joyful and optimistic attitude of the local culture. The images, captured in the Southwest, seek to capture the “decisive moment” when true emotions or joy are visible on the subjects’ faces or when the Milky Way is visible.
