Details

Roll 8:30 am // Distance 14+ miles // Elevation 2,500+ feet

The Ken Burton Loop in the San Gabriel Mountains is a breathtaking and challenging 14–15 mile route that rewards riders with a rich mix of terrain, history, and scenery. It begins with a steady climb up Brown Mountain. From there, you connect to the crux of the ride: the Ken Burton descent—a rugged singletrack carved into the side of Brown Mountain. This iconic trail includes over 20 steep, exposed switchbacks that demand technical finesse, culminating in the poignant Ken Burton memorial overlook.

After conquering the fast, rocky descent, the route winds into the Gaberielino Canyon bottom, where a scenic, sometimes loose riverbed trail leads you back to the JPL/Altadena trailhead.

ADVANCED BLUE LEVEL RIDE
You have a strong understanding and practice with braking, shifting, cornering, and descending skills. You can navigate variable terrain at a good pace. You are confident and comfortable riding singletrack trails and can easily navigate roots, rocks, mud, sand, and creek crossings. You are capable of a front wheel and rear wheel lift and can put the two together to navigate over obstacles. You are fairly confident on steep climbs and descents, but you may walk sections on Black or Double Black trails.
