From Alltrails: The Heart Creek Trail is a nice route for almost any hiker. The start of this trail begins from the parking lot just off the highway, so you will hear some highway noise at the beginning of this trail but that soon fades away to the peaceful sounds of the river and water running over rocks. This is truly a nice short walk through a mini canyon, which can be treated as a rest stop or an opportunity to run or walk. Once you get deep enough into the trail the sounds of the mini waterfalls drown out the noise of creeks and river. The trail is maintained pretty well, and it will be easy to follow. There is nothing technical or difficult, and hikers will be able to cross over a bunch of man made bridges as they zigzag over the creek.
Plan is to do both trails - You are welcome to join for one or both.
What to bring:
- Hiking shoes/boots with good treads.
- Hiking poles if you like to use them or for better control and balance.
- Microspikes.
- Headlamp (for the bunker)
- Foam pad (many options out there - shop around)
- Please dress in layers.
- Water - For winter hiking: use an insulated mug to keep your water from freezing or getting too cold to drink. If you use a water bladder, use an Insulation sleeve for the hose. Have some extra water (or hot tea) in your car to enjoy after the hike.
- Snacks/Lunch.
- Bear spray. Many have asked 'why in winter'? Here is a good article, and here is another. Also, our group sometimes separates into smaller groups, so if you ever end up in a group of two or three it is important that at least one person has bear spray.
- Personal first aid kit.
- Toilet paper (and a bag to carry it out after use).
Carpooling/Park Pass
If anyone needs a ride from the city, please make arrangements with fellow hikers and consider a contribution to your driver for gas and Kananaskis park pass. Unfortunately, I am unable to offer rides at this time.
