Mesa Butte - Hike (Moderate)
Details
Date: July 4, 2026
Hike Start Time: 9:00a.m.
Hike Finish Time: 2:00p.m. (approximate)
Distance: 9km
Elevation Gain: 400m
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
We are staying away from the mountains a little bit longer to allow recovery and cleanup crews to do their jobs. While we wait, join me for a relaxing hike to Mesa Butte.
From Alltrails: "This trail is well-defined, with lots of mild ups and downs. There is shade and it is largely protected from the wind and sun - great for a hot sunny day as there is limited exposure. There are lots of beautiful wildflowers in the area. The last kilometre is a bit of a grind up the hill but you will be rewarded with a picnic table, fire pit, and great views."
We will spend some time at the top to enjoy our lunch and relax (weather permitting) so bring a book, hammock, chair, blanket or anything else to make yourself comfortable.
Current weather forecast for Saturday looks great but it keeps changing - I am hopeful it will remain dry and sunny and that we don't have to cancel.
What to bring:
- Hiking shoes/boots with good treads.
- Hiking poles if you like to use them.
- Foam pad (many options out there - shop around)
- Please dress in layers.
- Plenty of water. Have some extra water in your car to enjoy after the hike.
- Lunch/snack.
- Bear spray.
- Personal first aid kit.
- Toilet paper (and a bag to carry it out after use).
Carpooling/Park Pass
If anyone needs a ride, please make arrangements through the event messaging. Consider a contribution to your driver for the gas and Kananaskis pass. Unfortunately, I am unable to offer rides at this time.
Also, please drive carefully. It is fawning season - many youngsters are out there running across roads.
Meeting Spot - 50.756280, -114.546262
Please use Alltrails directions or above coordinates - we will meet just after the North Fork Provincial Recreation Area on the left, after the bridge (there is no official parking lot).
