What we’re about

### The Amarillo Hiking Club

Founded by outdoor enthusiast Cindy Cohen, The Amarillo Hiking Club is a welcoming community of hikers who share a passion for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Texas Panhandle. Whether you're an experienced hiker or just beginning your journey into the great outdoors, our club offers a range of hikes suitable for all skill levels.
Our primary hiking destinations include some of the most stunning and diverse terrains in the region:

  • Palo Duro Canyon State Park – Often called the "Grand Canyon of Texas," Palo Duro Canyon boasts dramatic cliffs, colorful rock formations, and scenic trails that wind through rugged landscapes.
  • Caprock Canyons State Park – Known for its striking red rock formations, prairie grasslands, and the official Texas State Bison Herd, Caprock Canyons offers challenging trails and breathtaking views.
  • Lake Meredith National Recreation Area – This beautiful area features winding trails along the lake, rolling hills, and opportunities to explore the region’s unique flora and fauna.
  • Wildcat Bluff Nature Center – Located close to Amarillo, this scenic preserve offers peaceful, well-maintained trails that are perfect for shorter hikes and wildlife observation.
  • Other Local Trails and Hidden Gems – The Amarillo Hiking Club frequently organizes hikes in various other locations, including lesser-known trails, private land with permission, and seasonal destinations that offer unique natural beauty.

Our hikes vary in length and difficulty, ensuring there’s something for everyone, from casual walkers to avid backpackers. Some of our excursions also incorporate educational elements, such as learning about local wildlife, geology, and conservation efforts.

### Joining Our Hikes

Newcomers are always welcome! However, for safety reasons, all first-time hikers must sign a hold harmless agreement before participating in their first event. This can be completed by providing your name and email address to one of the club’s organizers prior to your first hike.
We encourage members to bring proper gear, including sturdy footwear, water, and weather-appropriate clothing. Our community is built on respect for nature and one another, and we always follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the beauty of our trails.
