Certainly, go to a ham club general meeting. If you don't already have an "Elmer" (nickname for a teaching buddy, regardless of sex) ask for one from one of the club's officers. Go to several clubs. Be very wary of buying used radios without an Elmer. Older radios for the 2 meter band (where the most active repeaters are, and any Technician Class ham can use) may not have PL tones in them. They will not let you talk on a repeater. We recommend getting a 50 watt 2 meter mobile radio modern enough to have PL tones. This can be used not only in a vehicle, but with a 13.8v power supply will be a base station.
