Bat Watching in Phoenix: Short walk, watch bats and then dinner.

Details
This is really special! Last night I spent a little under an hour watching the bats, and it was incredible. They fly just 20–30 feet overhead. You can hear the flutter of their wings and occasionally even catch their scent (not too strong).
Each evening, between 10,000 and 20,000 Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the tunnel. They come out in waves—hundreds at a time—followed by quiet lulls, and then another burst of activity.
You can read more about them here:
Phoenix Bat Cave
Tips:
- Bring a chair for comfort.
- There is shade, and last night there was even a nice breeze (though not guaranteed).

Meeting Details
- Parking: No parking is available at the trail itself. The following address is for a business park I parked at: 5090 N 40th St, Phoenix, AZ 85018 or you can find a location near by. (less than a 5-minute walk to the meeting point)
- Meeting Point: Chelsea’s Kitchen, 5040 N 40th St, Phoenix, AZ 85018
We’ll gather between the restaurant and N 40th Street. - Departure Time: 6:00 PM sharp. We won’t wait, as we need to be in place before the bats begin flying out.
- If You’re Late:
Walk about 50 feet south to the canal, turn right onto the dirt road (do not cross the canal), follow it for just under 10 minutes. We’ll be sitting on the right side, next to a fence partially hidden by bushes. Look for our silhouettes.

Evening Plan
- Watch the bats for about an hour.
- Walk back to the meeting point.
- Then head a couple blocks over for dinner at Gadzooks Enchiladas and Soup, located at 4031 E Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ.
(We’re not dining at Chelsea’s Kitchen, since it’s a bit pricey.)
No elevation gain.

Important Note: Do not be concerned as Ozzie Osbourne is dead so he won’t be showing up to bite bat heads off. As a side note, the real reason he died was due to a latent case of rabies from the real bat he partially ate.
