Sunrise Arch – Paddle, Hike, Paddle
Join us for a unique adventure combining kayaking/SUP and a short hike to the rarely visited Sunrise Arch. The arch is about 25 feet high and 30+ feet across, offering stunning views of the Salt River.

Overview

• Meet: Phon D Sutton Recreation Site (ending point) – ready to go at 6:30 AM. Arrive early to air up your kayak/SUP.
• PLEASE BE READY TO GO BY 6:30
• Shuttle: Drive to Water Users Recreation Site (launch point).

• Launch: 7:30 AM at Water Users.
• Paddle: About 400 yards across the Salt River. Hide flotation gear behind vegetation (safe).
• Hike: About 2 miles round trip, ~500 ft gain. Trails are rocky animal paths, not a distinct hiking trail. Allow ~2 hours for hiking, photos, and exploring.
• Return: Paddle back down the Salt River to Phon D Sutton Recreation Site.

What to Bring

• Hiking poles are a very good idea
• PFD/Life Jacket (your choice to wear on the water)
• Sturdy hiking shoes (carry across the river, change for hike)
• Drinking water, snacks, sunblock, hat
• Any extra items you typically bring kayaking
• Most of all, bring your spirit for an Amazing Arizona Adventure!

Passes/Parking

• A Tonto Day Pass is required: $8 in advance, or $12 at a kiosk (sometimes machines don’t work—better to get one ahead).
• An America the Beautiful Pass is also valid.

Important Note
The hike is off‑trail and requires sure footing—please review photos of the terrain beforehand.

Event leaders are volunteers, not professional guides. By attending, you are responsible for your own safety and belongings. Adults 18+ only, unless accompanied by a parent/legal guardian who assumes all responsibility.
