Endurance Hike: Superstition Wilderness: 20-Miles On Trail Canyon Traverse
Details
## Very Important – Please Read First
If you have a high-clearance vehicle (especially 4WD), post in the comments below.
The ~3-mile dirt road from Highway 88 to Tortilla Trailhead requires high clearance. Hiking from Tortilla Trailhead makes this a ~20-mile hike; otherwise, it's ~23 miles if we park at Highway 88.
## What You'll Experience
Venture deep into the rugged heart of the Superstition Wilderness, with craggy peaks and deep canyons.
Hike through Charlebois Spring, a desert oasis in Charlebois Canyon supporting lush cottonwoods and sycamores.
Hike through Peters, Malapais, Charlebois, Boulder, and La Barge Canyons, with close-up views of Tortilla, Malapais, and Battleship Mountains.
This rare route lets you see hidden Superstition gems.
## Hike Overview
This is a point-to-point hike from Tortilla Trailhead to Canyon Lake Marina. See the attached photo of the map showing the exact trail (green line with red outline just outside).
We'll drop off car(s) at Canyon Lake Marina, then drive to Tortilla Trailhead. Goal: Finish before dark.
- Distance: ~20 miles (estimates based on research; first time leading this route)
- Elevation Gain: ~1,100 feet
- Time: ~10 hours. Consistent pace, not super fast or slow.
This is a difficult hike due to the distance and not the trail. It will take most of the day.
Please assess your abilities before attempting it. If you are hesitant or recovering from anything or feeling compromised, I'd suggest to forgo this.
## Logistics
Meet at Leslie’s Pools at 6:15 AM – be on time.
Super Important: Bring lots of water (I'm carrying 6 quarts due to distance and time). Also bring a flashlight.
