Two hikes or just one: Freedom Trail and/or Piestewa Peak Summit

You can choose to do just the Freedom Trail or combine it with the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail for a longer hike.

Freedom Trail

• A beautiful 3.8-mile loop circling the base of Piestewa Peak.
• Rated moderate with 1,000 ft of cumulative elevation gain.
• Includes several rocky sections, so sure footing is helpful.

Piestewa Peak Summit Trail

• Offers stunning panoramic views of Phoenix and the surrounding mountains from an elevation of 2,608 ft.
• The trail adds approximately 1.5 miles round trip from the Freedom Trail.
• Elevation gain: 1,400 ft.
• Rated strenuous due to steep inclines; the final section requires careful footing. Some people opt to stop just before the top.

Further Details on choosing one or two hikes: From the parking lot, we walk about a mile to the junction where the trail we are on meets the Freedom Trail. From there, we hike around Piestewa Peak and return to the same junction. At this point, you can either head back to the parking lot (it’s very easy to find) or continue on to the summit of Piestewa Peak before returning to the parking lot.

Combined Distance: About 5.5 miles total

Approximate Time:

• Freedom Trail only: ~2 1/2 hours
• Both trails: ~3 1/2 hours

Pace: Steady and moderate

Recommended Gear:

• Hiking poles
• Pants
• 3 quarts of water
• Ample snacks or lunch
