Fish Creek: A Hidden Gem in the Superstitions

Tucked deep within the heart of the Superstition Wilderness, Upper Fish Creek remains one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets. This hike trades manicured trails for a true “off-trail” experience—an adventurous journey through a dramatic volcanic canyon.

Important note: There is probably water in the creek so bring shoes you do not mind getting wet.

## The Experience

This isn’t just another hike; it’s a walk into a lush desert oasis. Beginning at the iconic Fish Creek Bridge, the pavement disappears behind you as you enter a world of towering cliffs, giant boulders, and tranquil pools hidden beneath desert willows and sycamores.

## The Terrain

You’ll hop and sometime scramble across boulders, weave through sandy washes, and sometimes brush past riparian greenery thriving in the desert heart. The scrambling is more playful than punishing.

## Wildlife & Flora

Keep an eye out for coatimundi, javelina, or even bighorn sheep perched high above the canyon walls. Giant saguaros stand like sentinels along your route, marking one of the most vibrant desert ecosystems in the Superstitions.

## Important information

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Rock scrambling over boulders, no marked trail)
  • Distance: Flexible — typically 4–6 miles round trip, depending on time
  • Elevation Gain: Minimal
  • Vibe: Rugged, remote, and stunningly scenic
  • Timing: The return time of around 5:00 is just an estimate. I do my best to stick to it, but we may occasionally get back an hour or two later.
  • No Dogs allowed.

Why I cannot guarantee you will be back by 5: Sometimes the group is enjoying the hike. Perhaps we are taking lots of photos or just going slower due to the beauty or conversation, or we discover an interesting spot off the main trail worth exploring.

  • Suggestion: It’s best not to schedule other commitments right after the hike so you can stay flexible and enjoy the day without feeling rushed.
  • This is not a destination hike with a specific location we are going to.
