Join us for a beautiful one-way hike along the iconic Highline National Recreation Trail (#31) beneath the towering Mogollon Rim in Tonto National Forest!

We will journey through ponderosa pine forests, dramatic rock formations, rolling canyons, and scenic drainages.

This section offers a mix of gradual ups and downs with some rocky and exposed stretches.

We'll start at the Two Sixty Trailhead (east end of the Highline and east of Payson) and head west. The hike ends near Lower Tonto Creek Campground, which has a lovely small year-round creek running through it.

Details:

  • Distance: Approximately 13.5 miles one-way
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: Moderate cumulative gain (~1,500–2,000 ft) with rolling terrain
  • Difficulty: Strenuous — good fitness required
  • Type: Point-to-point (shuttle or car drop needed — we'll coordinate rides)
  • Back to Park and Ride by: 7:00 PM
  • Hiking time: 8 to 9 hours to include breaks

I cannot guarantee you will be back by 7:00 PM. Things happen. The above are estimates. I try to overestimate times so nobody is surprised.

Suggestion: It’s best not to schedule other commitments right after the hike so you can stay flexible and enjoy the day without feeling rushed.

What to Bring:

  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Plenty of water, snacks/lunch
  • Trekking poles recommended for rocky sections
  • Sun protection
  • Hiking boots/shoes with good traction

Meeting location: Power Road Park and Ride, 3055 N Power Road · Mesa, AZ (Meet Under the bridge).

This will be a shuttle. We will drop off cars at Lower Tonto Creek Campground then shuttle to the 260 trailhead.
