Cost Optimization and Infrastructure as Code
***
1. How to cost-optimise your workloads on AWS EKS using EC2 Spot, Graviton and Karpenter
by Borja Pérez, Specialist Solutions Architect at AWS
What is the session about?
- Kubernetes has enabled applications to be mostly agnostic to the underlying infrastructure and made it easier to run and scale containerized applications - but scaling the underlying compute capacity efficiently is challenging.
Karpenter (open-source project), observes the aggregated resource requests and makes decisions to launch or terminate nodes to reduce scheduling latencies and infrastructure costs. It is designed to work with any Kubernetes and any cloud or on-premise environments.
In this session we will review and demo, how Karpenter simplifies and accelerates infrastructure provisioning - including optimizations like workload consolidation, cost saving, ARM processors and much more. We will discuss the best practices for scaling kubernetes applications and the tools that will make your life easier managing the underlying compute infrastructure.
Who will present?
- Borja is currently working at AWS as the Flexible Compute Specialist Solutions Architect for the DACH-CEE region. Helps customers to leverage unused capacity in the cloud to run their workloads at a fraction of the cost of on-demand instances in a resilient and elastic way. Prior to entering the world of the cloud, worked as a full-stack developer and software engineer. Besides his job as a Solutions Architect, enjoys delivering masterclasses in universities such as IE Business School.

2. Optimizing Cloud Infrastructure Costs: The Power of Infrastructure as Code and Budget Actions
by Linda Mohamed, Principal Consultant at EBCONT
What is the session about?
- Managing cloud infrastructure costs can be a challenging task, especially for companies that rely on cloud computing services. To help mitigate this challenge, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) can be used to automate and streamline the deployment and management of resources, reducing unnecessary expenses. Additionally, setting budget actions to terminate costly resources from non-productive AWS accounts can save significant amounts of money. By adopting these practices, companies can optimize their cloud infrastructure costs, improve resource efficiency, and ultimately reduce overall expenses.
Who will present?
- Linda supports companies working with Cloud Technologies and specializes in IT Process Optimization and Agile Methodologies. She has held various positions over the past ten years, from Java Software Developer to Business Analyst to Product Owner, and holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Informatics.
In her spare time, she is passionate about juggling and drawing. She is also a member of the User Group Leader Team for AWS Meetup Vienna, AWS Community Builder for AI/ML, and volunteers on a Funding Advisory Board and for Women in AI.
