What we’re about
**The Appalachian Mountain Club's Connecticut Chapter organizes about 1,000 hikes, bike rides, mountaineering and other events each year. Most of these do not appear in this Meetup. To get details of all of our events and to join our email lists please go to [www.CT-AMC.org](http://www.CT-AMC.org)** The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization. The CT Chapter of AMC is a statewide organization that has something for everyone who loves to explore the outdoors, for beginners or experts. We offer hiking, kayaking, cycling, trail building and maintenance and land conservation activities throughout the year. So, what sets us apart? • Trained leaders means our activities are organized, everyone stays together as a group assisting each other as needed and we follow certain safety protocols. • Group activities are open to everyone (so long as you meet the fitness and equipment requirements). Events listed as Young Members are designed for members ages 20-40 but all AMC events are open to all ages. This Meetup group is sponsored by members of the AMC Connecticut Chapter. For additional information about AMC, the CT Chapter and the activities we-sponsor, please visit [www.ct-amc.org](http://www.ct-amc.org). Thru the year, we offer more than 1000 activities. All current activities are listed on our website for each activity committee. For example, current hiking activities including skiing and snowshoeing are shown on the [chapter website](http://www.ct-amc.org/excursions/HikeListings.shtm). The AMC web site ([www.outdoors.org](http://www.outdoors.org/)) has further information about the main club including lodging, adventure travel, and more. Just a reminder that only AMC-approved leaders may lead activities that will be listed on this site. We can allow others to co-lead activities with an approved leader. If you are interested in becoming an approved leader, the next leader training is always shown [on our website](http://ct-amc.org/Education/index.shtm). **Please note:** Some events are marked "Registration Required". An RSVP here does **not** satisfy this requirement. Registration requires direct contact with the event leader, either by email or phone. \ [](http://ct-amc.org/Education/index.shtm)

Note: This is hike #6 in the Giant Master hike challenge that I will be leading over the next year. You don’t have to be participating in the challenge to attend this hike. If you are interested in the challenge - check out this link: https://sgpa.org/giant-master/ . I will be repeating these hikes as I complete my four season Giant Master challenge. There are six hikes in total to complete all the trails. This is the final and most challenging of all the hikes in the series. (Within the next month I will start the series over with hike #1)
If you are doing the challenge, here is the information for your Giant Master Log: Today’s hike completes all the sections of the Yellow Trail. And sections II, III, IV, V, VI of the Blue Trail. Former Caretaker, Chair, and AT Thru-hiker, Roy Hoffman will be traveling from VT to cook his delicious breakfast sandwiches for everyone beginning at 8:30 AM.
No major new projects this year, but the ongoing chores that are needed to maintain NWC are plenty (stacking wood, cleaning ashpit, water bar maintenance, trail trimming, painting, staining, general ground pickup, etc.). We have added one continuous project to the list of chores: maintaining and improving the berm and the erosion control above the cabin.
Come and meet the NWC Committee and friends. Enjoy the beautiful area of NWC and the surrounding areas. Please dress accordingly for the weather, with work clothes you won't mind getting stained or dirty. Gloves, loppers, shovels, rakes, and sturdy shoes are needed. Audience: Everyone- Description: Experience two of Rhode Island's best traffic free bike paths and witness Providence's WaterFire from a Venetian gondola!
The Blackstone River Bikeway follows the Blackstone River wherever possible, including on the tow paths of the historic Blackstone Canal. This highly scenic 20 mile (RT) bikeway crosses the river many times, offering views of waterfalls, marshes and wildlife. Many old mills line the river too, evidence of the impact of the Industrial Revolution that earned the Blackstone the title of the "hardest-working river in America."
The famous East Bay Bike Path is the first multi-town bike path built in Rhode Island. It travels 30 miles (RT) between Providence and Bristol, passing many recreation areas including beautiful Colt State Park. Capture glistening views of the Providence River as it empties into Narragansett Bay.
WaterFire is an award-winning sculpture installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, and has been praised as a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance. WaterFire’s over eighty sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the fire-tenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the riverfront paths.
In addition to observing from shore, we will glide past the flaming braziers of WaterFire on a private gondola cruise.
'WaterFire is one of the most dreamlike and extraordinary events one could ever witness, and gliding along on an authentic Venetian gondola mere feet from the flames is surreal! Enjoy the fascinating union of fire and water and the evocative music as your gondolier expertly rows you along the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers. Truly, this is an indescribable event, and a memory that lasts a lifetime.'
 Cost: $350
Includes: Two days guided bicycling Overnight hotel accommodation (DO) in downtown Providence Breakfast and valet parking WaterFire gondola cruise Gratuities for the gondoliers
