**The Appalachian Mountain Club's Connecticut Chapter organizes about 1,000 hikes, bike rides, mountaineering and other events each year. Most of these do not appear in this Meetup. To get details of all of our events and to join our email lists please go to [www.CT-AMC.org](http://www.CT-AMC.org)** The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. AMC is the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization. The CT Chapter of AMC is a statewide organization that has something for everyone who loves to explore the outdoors, for beginners or experts. We offer hiking, kayaking, cycling, trail building and maintenance and land conservation activities throughout the year. So, what sets us apart? • Trained leaders means our activities are organized, everyone stays together as a group assisting each other as needed and we follow certain safety protocols. • Group activities are open to everyone (so long as you meet the fitness and equipment requirements). Events listed as Young Members are designed for members ages 20-40 but all AMC events are open to all ages. This Meetup group is sponsored by members of the AMC Connecticut Chapter. All current activities are listed on our website for each activity committee. Just a reminder that only AMC-approved leaders may lead activities that will be listed on this site. We can allow others to co-lead activities with an approved leader. Audience: EveryoneDescription: A 7 mile loop with 1200 feet of elevation on trails that are often rocky with uneven footing. Sturdy hiking boots with good grippy soles are a must. Poles can be helpful. Plan to hike at a rigorous pace (2 mph).. Bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. Steady rain cancels. No dogs. Registration requested. We will meet at the Mt. Carmel Avenue main entrance of Sleeping Giant at 8:30 AM and start the hike promptly at 8:45 AM. (Be ready to start hiking at 8:45, incorporate extra time BEFORE for restroom stop). Audience: EveryoneDescription: Beat the heat with this 8+/- mile loop with about 800 feet of elevation gain through this excellent property studded with the famous pink granite. Registration requested (if you have to cancel, please do so 48 hours before the hike). Bring plenty of water, snacks/lunch, bug spray, sunscreen, and a personal first aid kit. We will hike at a pace of about 2+/- mph (depending upon the heat). No dogs please. Inclement weather cancels.
We will meet at 8:00 AM to start hiking promptly at 8:15 AM. The end time of this activity is only an estimate. We will meet at the parking lot on Quarry Road off of State Highway 146 in Branford, CT. Google Maps calls this Kelley Memorial Preserve. Audience: AdultsDescription: Continuing a series of mostly moderate hikes covering all of the CT AT (sections averaging 5-8 miles each), this 7.5-8 mile hike (avg. pace of 1.8-2mph) includes a long, level stretch along the Housatonic River. The path is through wooded areas with a few stream crossings and a corridor of birches and fields. At Cornwall Bridge, there is a gradual climb up Silver Hill (elev. 1266 ft.), a steep short descent and then crossing Rte. 4 to traverse wide Guinea Brook on stepping stones. Please consider your comfort/experience with water crossings and bring appropriate gear (e.g., extra socks in case you get wet feet, water shoes, poles, etc.) We then will ascend a short, steep hill to the junction of the Mohawk Tr. and continue up to the viewpoint on Breadloaf Mt,. To end, we will descend 0.5 mi. on the Mohawk Trail to cars. Rain or excessive heat cancels; RAIN DATE: June 22. No dogs, please. Brink snacks and plenty of water. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to small parking areas at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
