Celebrate the AT at 100! CT Section Hike #8: Rt. 44-Lion's Head-Undermountain Rd

Description: Continuing a serie s of mostly moderate hikes covering all of the CT AT (sections averaging 5-8 miles each), this approx. 7.5-8 mile hike (avg. pace 1.8-2 mph) begins with a .7-mile AT road and field walk in Salisbury from Rt. 44 to the Rt. 41 AT trailhead. Heading north, we have a moderate ascent, level out, and have a steeper climb and short rocky sections just before summiting Lion's Head (1,738') and then enjoying the views from the north outlook of Bear Mtn. and, in the far distance, Mt. Greylock (MA). The AT levels out passing through a remote wooded area on Riga Plateau, passing the Riga campsite, and crossing Ball and Brassie brooks to the Riga junction with the Undermountain Trail. Saving our ascent up and over Bear Mtn. for the final CT section hike, we will instead veer east and descend 1.9 miles on Undermountain trail to our cars. Rain and/or extreme heat cancels; RAIN DATE: August 17. No dogs, please. Bring snacks and plenty of water. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to small parking areas at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
