Description: This approx. 6- mile loop hike (pace 1.8-2 mph) completes our series covering all of the CT sections of the AT. We begin on the back side of Bear Mt., reaching the AT on an access trail near AMC's Northwest Camp. Our route descends into Sages Ravine and runs parallel to the brook on rocky footing, traveling along fern and moss- covered rock formations, dens, waterfalls and pools. The AT passes into MA over stepping stones at a small fall and ascends to a path that loops back to Sage's Ravine Campground and the brook for another crossing. Picking up the AT again, we reverse direction and ascend out of the Ravine to climb Bear Mt. The quarter- mile long rock scramble up to the summit begins with a moderate climb on stone steps, with bedrock and roots taking over, gradually becoming steeper. The summit (2316 ft.) offers shade, sun and rewarding views. Descending the south slope of Bear Mt. is more on the gentle side with some moderate sections, rocky footing, and more great western views. The last mile to our cars is flat and easy. For this hike you must be comfortable crossing a wide brook on stepping stones; please contact the leader with any questions about the overall terrain before registering. Excessive heat and humidity, or rain cancels; RAIN DATE: Aug. 24. No dogs, please. Bring snacks/lunch and plenty of water. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED . Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
