Description: This initiates a series of mostly moderate hikes covering the MA sections of the AT. This first, approx. 7- mile hike (pace 1.5-2 mph) on the southernmost section stretches from the CT line in Salisbury to the foot of the Taconic Range in Mt. Washington. It is rugged in many areas, running along glacier-scoured rocks on ridge crests and offering magnificent views. Beginning at Guilder Pond, in Mt. Everett State Reservation and heading south, we will ascend to the summit of Mt. Everett, the "Dome of the Taconics" (2602 ft.), and then descend on steepish bedrock into the saddle between Mts. Everett and Race. Next, we'll ascend to the open summit of Mt. Race (2365 ft.) for views that may include (weather permitting) the Taconics, Monument Mt., Mt. Greylock, the Catskills and two eastern peaks that are further north-east on the AT, East and Warner Mts. The trail runs south along an open cliff edge and then close to the edge of an escarpment, with more, sweeping views east of the Housatonic River Valley. (NOTE: The AT here is never less than approx. 15 feet from the escarpment edge, but if you have any concerns about hiking on exposed, rocky ledges near an open drop-off, please contact hike leader before registering.) The trail then descends gradually, through woodlands to Sages Ravine, where we will pick up an access trail back to our cars on Mt. Washington Road. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful for steepish ascents/descents, leaf-littered trails and any soggy brook-crossing conditions. No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain cancels. RAIN DATE: Oct. 12. Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
