Description: Continuing a series of mostly moderate hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx.7.5 mile section is out of sequence primarily to take advantage of the still-moderate Fall weather. Starting in Sheffield, our hike (avg. pace of 1.5-2 mph) passes through woodlands, wetlands, open fields and along the Housatonic River. There will be long stretches of flat to rolling terrain between moderate ascents and descents. Within the last 1.6 miles, the trail ascends June Mountain (1221'). The last ascent is a little steeper and rockier than previous ones, which can be challenging at the end of a hike. There will be brief stops for pastoral views, the historic Shay's Rebellion marker, on bridges to view seasonal fauna and flora, etc. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful for steepish ascents/descents, leaf-littered trails and any soggy brook-crossing conditions. No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain cancels. RAIN DATE: Nov. 16. Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
