Dick began seriously sailing after grad school when he began crewing and skippering at Larchmont Yacht Club. Beginning in 1970, he crewed on IODs, Etchells, and skippered frostbite dinghies, and his Shields. A few years later he began crewing in distance races on handicap boats. On his first Bermuda race in 1974, Dick discovered he “loves to be at sea”. Dick sailed extensively until 1985, including five Bermuda races in roles up to watch captain, when his career moved him to the Midwest and engrossed him.
In 2000, Dick retired and bought his J/46 ARAGORN. For three years, he sailed ARAGORN to the Windwards and Leewards every winter for warm cruising, then returned in May for summer cruising in New England. From 2003 to 2007, he circumnavigated westabout, via the Panama Canal through the Galapagos, French Polynesia, and other Pacific Islands; then to Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. From there, he sailed to India and through the Suez Canal. After two summers in the Mediterranean, he sailed across the Atlantic, crossing his outward track off Antigua. Dick continues to sail and cruise ARAGORN in New England water with two additional winters in the Islands. He also sails with friends, as in the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Rally and in the Stockholm Archipelago. Additionally, he has helped friends with deliveries in Europe and four passages from the US to the Caribbean, the most recent in November 2023. In late 2024, Dick did buy a Back Cove 41 powerboat(!) and cruises from Larchmont to Down East Maine on her.
Dick is a member of Larchmont YC, Cruising Club of America, the Storm Trysail Club, and New York YC. He chaired the Yachting Committee at Larchmont for eight years, was the Fleet Captain for four years, and he has served on four other major committees there. Dick likes to give back by being significantly involved in Safety-at-Sea. Dick became the Chairman of the US Sailing Safety-at-Sea Committee on January 2021, and remains in that position. He plays major roles in Storm Trysail seminars, and he ran Junior SaS seminars for JSA of LIS. Dick also is a leader in CCA Cruising Couples seminars. Dick is on the NYYC Seamanship Committee, the Storm Trysail Seamanship Committee, the CCA Seamanship Committee, and is the CCA New York Station Safety Officer.
