Description: Continuing a series of hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 6-6.5 mile section (pace 1.5-2mph) begins at the trailhead on Rt. 23 and moves northward through hardwood forest and a red maple swamp, skirts an inlet of Benedict Pond, and leads up a steep and rocky hike to the Ledges. These ledges offer views west of the surrounding forests, East Mtn. and Mt. Everett. The trail continues past both the Mt. Wilcox South and Mt. Wilcox North shelters, traveling briefly on an old section of the AT, then descends gradually through Beartown State Forest to our cars. Expect rolling woodland terrain, brief rocky scrambles, some lowland wet areas and bog bridges, Spring wildflowers and birdsong, Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful for steepish ascents/descents. No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain cancels. RAIN DATE: May 31. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
