Description: Celebrate National Trails Day on the AT! Continuing a series of hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 6.5-7 mile section (pace 1.5-2mph) begins on Beartown Mtn. Rd. and meanders north to the border of Beartown State Forest, passes Sky Hill (elev. 1919 ft.), crosses Jerusalem Rd. and then reaches the Shaker campsite with its stone remnants of an active Shaker community in the area (1795-1875). We continue into Tyringham Valley, noted for historic farmland and rolling pastures, to the 200-acre Tyringham Cobble Reservation, hike up and over the summit of Cobble Hill, and enjoy local wildflowers and views from rocky outcrops of the valley, with Hop Brook and the village below. The approx. last mile takes us through a cow pasture and boardwalk over the fields of the Hop Brook floodplain, to our cars. Expect rolling woodland terrain with ascents/descents, some brief rocky scrambles and possible seasonal stream crossings. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful . No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain cancels. RAIN DATE: June 7. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
