Description: Continuing a series of hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 8.5-9 mile section (pace 1.5-2mph) begins on Main St. in Tyringham and moves north, ascending and eventually crossing over Baldy Mtn. (ele. 1873 ft.). Continuing through forest and rolling hills, the trail crosses the plateau of the Berkshire Highlands with occasional views of Tyringham Valley, and leads partially around Upper Goose Pond, a glacial lake that is now part of a National Park Service Natural area. The trail continues up and along a ridge, crosses over I 90 via a pair of pedestrian bridges, and finsihes by crossing a stream with a bridge over an historical mill site, leading to AT parking on Rt. 20. Expect typical New England woodland terrain, with some rocky areas and numerous ups and downs, and a few seasonal brook crossings. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful . No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain cancels. RAIN DATE: June 21. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
