Description: Continuing a series of hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 9.5 mile section (pace 1.5-2mph; total elev. gain approx. 1800 ft.) begins on Jacob's Ladder Road /Rt. 20 in Lee and moves north, ascending two mountains, Beckett Mtn. (elev. 2176 ft.) and Walling Mtn.(2210 ft.) in the first two miles, and then skirting along Finerty Pond. Continuing through forest and typical New England woodland terrain, we will encounter one more mountain, Bald Top (2050 ft.) and stop by a favorite shelter of thru hikers, October Mountain Shelter. There are several stream crossings on stepping stones and other smaller brook crossings throughout this section. Please make sure you are comfortable with seasonal water features. Hike leader will monitor water levels closer to the hike date and share any important information. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful, especially with water crossings . No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). High temperatures and/or heavy rain cancels. RAIN DATE: August 23. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
