Description: Continuing a series of mostly moderate section hikes covering all of the CT AT, this longer, approx. 9.5 mile hike will run south (avg. pace 1.5-2 mph), starting at a hiker lot on River Rd., north near Cornwall Bridge, to the AT lot on Rt. 341 in Kent. For the first approx. 5 miles, we will travel on mostly level, shaded terrain, though two fields and then along the Housatonic River, crossing small brooks and stopping to visit the Stewart Hollow Brook shelter. Turning inland, the trail ascends a steepish, rocky scramble of up to 90 steps to St. John's Ledges and then continues up to Caleb's Peak (elev. 1,150 ft.) . From there, we walk through moderate New England woodland terrain, with some rocky/rooted ups and downs and additional brook crossings, hiking over and down Glacier and Numeral rocks, and ending with a brief .4- mile road walk to our cars. Total elevation gain is approximately 1500 ft, most of it hiked in the second half of the section. Bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful for steepish ascents/descents and seasonal water-crossing conditions. No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (a 19-minute car spot is required; 2-3 volunteers are needed.). High Temperatures and/or heavy rain cancels. RAIN DATE: Sunday, Aug. 30. Leader will provide more details and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
