Description: Continuing a series of hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 8- mile section (pace 1.5-2 mph; total elev. gain approx. 1600 ft.) crosses the plateau of the southern Hoosac Range (Berkshire Highlands).Beginning with a short walk through small-town Cheshire from the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail parking area, we pass the hiker-friendly, in-town Fr. Tom Campsite and then enter the woods. A feature of this hike comes early, an ascent up and short side-trail visit to the Cobbles (1841 elev.), a large, marble rocky outcrop offering panoramic views of the Hoosac River Valley and Mt. Greylock in the distance. Most of our hike will then include rolling forested terrain, mostly along the plateau of North Mtn. We'll cross an outlet of Gore Pond, one of the highest ponds in MA, and then continue to stop for lunch at Crystal Mtn. Campsite. Our hike will end at the foot of North Mtn. in Dalton. There will be a few seasonal stream/brook crossings; hike leader will monitor water levels closer to the hike date and share any important information. Bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful, especially with water crossings and elevation changes . No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (a 15-minute car spot is required, 2-3 volunteers are needed.). High temperatures and/or heavy rain cancels. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers a couple of days before the hike.
