Description: Join me for this beautiful 6.5 mile loop hike with about 600 feet of elevation gain. Registration requested but not required. We will hike up to the summit and then take the River’s Edge Loop to the Hauser bridge, a 120-foot suspension footbridge. Crossing the river we will explore the Railroad Tunnel and then hike in the Clamshell area. We will cross the river again and then walk along the Shepaug River back to our cars. I will be using this hike as the final pass through to confirm directions for the upcoming new edition of 50 Hikes in CT, be prepared for short stops at each intersection and for photographs. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and snacks/lunch. It is a good idea to also bring a personal first aid kit and rain gear. Heavy rain or thunderstorms will cancel this hike. We will meet at 9:30 for a 9:45 starting time at the parking area near the Shepaug River in Washington Depot (2 Tunnel Road). We will hike at a pace of about 2-2.2 mph. Expect this hike to take at least 4 hours to accommodate stops and the inevitable slow downs of hiking in a group. Any questions, do not hesitate to contact the leader. directions: I'm having a hard time getting the pin on the map to be in the parking area! From the intersection of CT 67 and CT 199 in Roxbury, go north on CT 199 (Roxbury Road). After 0.6 miles turn left onto Spring Hill Road. Then in 0.3 miles turn right onto Tunnel Road. Soon the road turns left to go over the river, there is a dirt parking area directly in front of you before the turn to cross the river and a smaller parking area just after you go over the bridge. We will meet in the larger lot before crossing the river.
