Description: This is a hike of about 6 miles, starting with a challenging uphill climb, and a net elevation gain of about 900'. We will meet at the Giuffrida Park parking lot adjoining Crescent Lake (Bradley Hubbard Reservoir) and hike along parts of the Mattabesett Trail, which is a CFPA Blue Trail, and part of the New England Trail – National Scenic Trail. We will begin with a steep ascent of Chauncey Peak (688'), aided by switchbacks. Proceed north on this trap rock ridge with vistas west of the reservoir and east of a large, terraced, trap rock quarry. Descend to North Branch Harbor Brook, and begin a gradual ascent of Mt. Lamentation (720') on the Yellow Trail. Rejoin the Mattabesett Trail which along the western edge of the Lamentation Mt. ridge, with westward vistas of the Berlin Turnpike, AMTRAK rail lines, Beaver Pond, and Silver Lake. Descend toward Crescent Lake on Mattabesett Trail, and return to parking lot on White Trail along west bank of Crescent Lake.
