This will be a 4 hour hike with a slow pace at the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in the Monongahela National Forest of WV. The plan is to walk up forest road 19 from the Red Creek Trailhead. The road is gated off in the winter. All access to the parking lot is from Bonner Mountain Road due to road construction and gated off forest roads on the Jordan Run Road side of the mountain. We will walk up to 3 miles uphill on the forest road and turnaround at some point with no set objective. Maximum elevation gain is 1,400' feet. Microspikes will be required at the start. Bring snowshoes with a way to fasten them to your pack. It's going to be a warm day and we may need to switch to them to avoid postholing. Minimum group size in the winter is 4 for safety with a maximum of 10 due to land manager regulations. Meet at the gate. Do not drive into the trailhead parking lot unless you have a high clearance vehicle due to icy ruts in the road. There is room for a few cars near the gate without blocking it. There is more room on the side of the road near the bridge over Red Creek. The forecast is calling for sunny conditions with a high of 39 and with wind gusts up to 36 mph. You will want to have shell clothing to avoid getting cold. Your day pack should include standing around warm clothing in case we have to stop for more than a lunch break. Plenty of ways to volunteer and I have found it to be an enjoyable way to give back to a place I love.
